Is It Possible To Revive A Dead Car Battery?

Car Battery Maintenance Tips

The car battery is an essential part of your car and requires extra care to maintain its lifespan. If you take care of it properly, then it can last for a long time. Sometimes your car battery gets damaged in 2 to 3 years if it is not maintained accurately.

Usually, a car battery gets damaged when the lead-acid cores experience Sulfation. In the sulfation condition, the lead plates accumulate sulfur on them that affects the battery shell. When the sulfation condition occurs, the battery takes more time to charge, heat up quickly, and lose its charge storing capability. The main reasons for sulfation condition are overcharging, undercharging, and storing it at excess heat places.

Normally, people throw the damaged batteries as they are not for use. But, do you know that the dead car battery can be revived? Yes, you can repair your dead car battery and use that for an extra 4 to 5 years. However, you can’t revive a physically damaged battery. You can restore your battery if it is not so old or physically not damaged. By reviving your car battery, you can extend the battery life of your existing battery and save the cost of a new battery. In this article, you can find some methods to revive your dead car battery. By using these methods, you can repair your dead car battery with ease.

As it is a technical task, you can go for it if you are aware of the parts of a car battery. If you are a non-technical person, then you can seek the help of a professional for this task. The following are the methods to follow for reviving a dead car battery.

Car Battery Maintenance Tips

Add More Acid To The Car Battery

It is one of the most followed methods for repairing the dead car batteries because it is safer than other methods. In this method, the battery is filled with extra acid and distilled water for restoring. As you have to deal with hazardous car battery acid, you should be extra careful while doing this method. First, you can measure the battery. If it shows very low voltage, then you can make sure that the battery is totally dead. After that, you can open the battery and add the perfect amount of distilled water to it. When you add distilled water to a lead-acid battery, the battery becomes ready for charging.

If you see spilling of acid from the battery, then you can consider adding some acid to it. If there is no spilling, then you can skip adding of acid. As distilled water is added to the battery, you can allow the battery to charge. The dried acid will mix with the distilled water by chemical reaction, and the battery will start working.

If your battery is suffering from sulfation condition, then you can follow the below steps to revive it.

Step 1

Find a clean and ventilated area to carry out this process. First, clean the battery using a mixture of clean water and baking soda. Baking soda is not harmful to the battery, and it can also offset the car battery acid. Also, you should make sure to clean the corrosion from battery terminals and connections. By cleaning the battery parts, you can carry out this process with ease.

Step 2

Now, you can prepare a solution by adding 0.5 lb of magnesium sulfate to the boiling water. If you don’t want to make it on your own, then you can use car battery acid.

Step 3

In this step, you can open the battery cover to put the solution prepared in the previous step. You can use a screwdriver to open the top cover and plastic caps. After that, you can drill the hole as per marking for a clear view. Once every part is opened, you can use a clean wet cloth to wipe out debris and dirt if any.

Step 4

You can bring a plastic funnel to put the prepared solution in the battery. As acid reacts with metal, you shouldn’t use a metal funnel to pour the solution. In this process, you need to make sure that the lead-acid plates are submerged into the acid. Once the battery is ready to be used, you can put the covers back.

Step 5

Now, you can charge the battery for at least 24 hours. After charging, you can check the voltage and add the solution again if required. By doing this process at least two or three times, you can restore the life of your dead car battery.

So, the reviving process of the dead car battery is very easy, and any person can do it instead of replacing the car battery. If you think this process is effective for you, then you can revive your dead car battery to use that again.
